What type of incinerator is the MER 50?

The MER 50 has been manufactured as a low cost solution for the rapid incineration of loads up to 50kg an hour using either natural or propane gas. The incinerator has been specifically designed for burning non-recyclable waste.

Why not use another method of disposal instead of incineration?

Previously, farmers and livestock producers disposed of carcases by placing dead animals into lime pits. However lime and bacteria contaminate the land and eventually enter the water supply. This is something the water utilities companies’ guard against. Therefore legislation has been brought in to prevent the use of lime pits as a method of disposal.

Legislation has now been brought in for the disposal of animal blood, which can no longer be poured down the drains by abattoirs/farmers for reasons of public health. These changes to the law are rigorously enforced by DEFRA. For many farmers and businesses the only other option available is to transport non-recyclable waste to large industrial incinerators.

Composting is not a viable alternative, the odour that would be created by thousands of carcases and tonnes of blood would quite simply be too much.

Why use this type of incinerator to dispose of Non-recyclable Waste?

Recent changes in the law mean that new incinerators have to comply with the 1990 Environmental Protection Act, Secretary of State’s Guidance.

When the initial plans for the MER 50 were laid down the overall guiding philosophy was to design an incinerator that was easy to control and most important, environmentally safe. This has now been carried through to the final product.

Incineration has traditionally been seen as an environmentally unfriendly method for disposing of non-recyclable waste. However the MER 50 is environmentally sound in that it can dispose of non-recyclable waste in a way that significantly minimises the impact on the local environment and the atmosphere.

The MER 50 is ideally suited for the disposal of non-recyclable waste in an environmentally safe way.

How do I know the gases given off by the MER 50 are safe?

The MER 50 is a tried and tested refractory lined furnace design. During the combustion cycle the system uses secondary air to guarantee complete combustion and energy efficient incineration. The secondary chamber ensures that all exhaust gases are within the prescribed limits laid down by the Secretary of States Guidance notes before being released into the atmosphere.

In short, the second after burner of the MER 50 operates at a temperature in which any VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) are destroyed before they leave the incinerator into the atmosphere. This second burner also removes unpleasant odours from the air, ensuring the MER 50 is an environmentally sound method of waste incineration.

The MER 50 meets all requirements in relation to gaseous emissions; in fact the fumes given off are cleaner and safer than those from the exhaust of a typical diesel van.

What are the Benefits of the MER 50?

Regulatory

The MER 50 complies with all existing regulations regarding its performance and safety requirements. This ensures that non-recyclable wastes are disposed of correctly as would be expected by law.

Environmental

The MER 50 is a more environmentally safe way to dispose of waste compared to other methods, which are prohibited by law. Not only is the MER 50 environmentally friendly it is also operationally safe for its operators.

Safety

A safety interlocking system ensures that the door to the main chamber cannot be opened unless the afterburner has reached its target temperature. The MER 50 is designed so that whenever the door is opened the heat is drawn through the flue and away from the operator.

Monitoring

Regulatory requirements state that for certain applications e.g. clinical waste, require constant monitoring. For this Incinerate-it.com through ManningsRFID can incorporate a combination of CCTV to record the MER 50 and a sophisticated remote monitoring system called aTAG. The aTAG system records and logs emissions from the MER 50 for future reference. Incinerate-it.com also use digital scales in order to record the weight of waste incinerated in order to help keep a track of the operation and also the performance of the MER 50.
